At last, the cooking demonstration. It didn't happen in the kitchen, but at the dinner table. I'd love to get one of the locally made mortar and pestles as they have so much character, but they weigh a ton and I'm already at my baggage limit. Will see if it's possible to ditch stuff or send it home, as this would be a great addition to the kitchen. What do you think, Leonie?
Ibu's recipe:The first 4 ingredients are pulped a bit, and then the palm sugar is added. Sambal is pretty easy to make and it tastes better than the stuff we buy at home. Still tastes hot, but the palm sugar gives it a gloss of sweetness.
For dinner tonight we had omlet telur, capcay kuah (like stir-fried vegies), bakwan jagung (corn fritters - enak sekali - delicious), tempe Mendoan, and sambal tomat. Another magnificent feast.
While eating fruit, Aaron and Priscilla taught me some Javanese words: emoh (no), hooh (yes), and apik (OK).
